Can You Buy Hot Food With EBT?

The Short Answer: No, you generally cannot buy hot food with your EBT card if you receive SNAP benefits (food stamps). This includes items like rotisserie chicken, hot pizza, hot dogs, and hot coffee—basically anything that's warm when you purchase it.

What About Cold Prepared Foods?

Good news! You can use your EBT card to buy prepared foods that are sold cold and meant to be eaten later. These include:

  • Salad kits
  • Pre-cut fruit and vegetable trays
  • Pre-made chicken salad, tuna salad, or egg salad
  • Cold sandwiches from the deli section

The Restaurant Meals Program (RMP)

There is a special program called the Restaurant Meals Program that allows some people to buy hot food at restaurants with their EBT card. This program helps people who have trouble cooking their own meals because they:

  • Don't have a home
  • Have a disability
  • Are elderly

This program is only available in these nine states:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New York
  • Rhode Island

Participating restaurants include chains like Subway and McDonald's, plus other local spots. Look for signs on restaurant windows or doors to see if they accept RMP.

Creative Ways to Get Hot Food With EBT

Even if you don't qualify for RMP, there are a couple of ways to work around the hot food rule:

  • Take-and-bake pizza: Buy an uncooked pizza at the store with your EBT card, then bake it at home.
  • Some Halal stores: Certain Middle Eastern delis sell food cold (which is EBT-eligible), then offer to heat it up for you for free.
