Where Can You Use SNAP Benefits? A Guide to Online and In-Store Shopping

For the millions of Americans using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), buying groceries has become much more convenient.

While you used to have to visit a supermarket in person, you can now use your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to buy food online at many popular retailers.

Here is a breakdown of where you can shop using your benefits.

Stores That Accept EBT Online and In-Person

Many major retailers now allow you to use your EBT card for both walking into the store and ordering groceries through their websites or apps. These include:

  • Walmart
  • Target
  • ALDI
  • Amazon: You can use your benefits for grocery delivery in most states, particularly through the Amazon Fresh service.

Many of these stores also allow you to place an online order for "curbside pickup," making shopping faster and easier.

Stores That Only Accept EBT In-Person

Some popular stores accept SNAP benefits at the checkout counter but do not yet support EBT for online orders. If you want to shop at these locations, you will need to visit them in person:

  • Costco
  • Sam’s Club
  • Trader Joe’s

Pharmacies and Convenience Stores

You aren't limited to just large supermarkets. Many smaller retailers and pharmacies also accept EBT for eligible food items:

  • Pharmacies: CVS and Walgreens
  • Discount Stores: Dollar Tree
  • Convenience Stores: 7-Eleven

Helpful Tools for SNAP Users

If you are unsure where to go or how much money you have left on your card, there are digital tools to help.

For example, an app called Propel allows users to check their EBT balance on their phones and find nearby stores that accept their benefits.

Summary

While shopping habits are changing, the SNAP program is keeping up by expanding into online spaces.

Whether you prefer to walk through the aisles or have your groceries delivered to your door, there are now more options than ever to use your benefits effectively.
